Former AFC Wimbledon Striker Charlie Wyke Retires After 15-Year Career

Charlie Wyke, the former AFC Wimbledon striker, has announced his retirement from professional football at age 33. The veteran forward, who played for the Dons during a loan spell, reflected on a career marked by triumphs and adversity, including a cardiac arrest in 2021 and a severe ankle injury in 2024. Wyke’s final match came in April 2026, when he appeared as a substitute for Carlisle United in the National League.

A Career of Highs and Lows

Wyke’s journey included two stints at Carlisle United, spells at Middlesbrough, Bradford City, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, and loan moves to Kettering Town, Hartlepool United, and AFC Wimbledon. He described his career as "a dream come true," highlighting promotions, a Wembley trophy, and the privilege of playing alongside "unbelievable people." However, his path was also defined by setbacks, including a cardiac arrest that nearly ended his career and a grueling 462-day rehabilitation from an ankle injury.

Life-Saving Moments and Family Support

Wyke credited Wigan manager Leam Richardson and Dr. Jonathan Tobin with saving his life during his cardiac arrest in 2021. He emphasized the role of family, friends, and football supporters in helping him overcome challenges. "Football wasn’t my biggest concern," he said, focusing instead on being there for his children, Chelsea, Albie, and Ava. His resilience became a lesson for his kids: "No matter what life throws at you, you keep going."

AFC Wimbledon’s Season Context

As Wyke retires, AFC Wimbledon finished the 2025 League One season in 19th place with 53 points (15W-8D-23L), scoring 51 goals and conceding 72. The Dons ended 50 points behind leaders Lincoln City and will next face Bromley at home on February 13, 2027. Wyke’s loan spell with the club remains a memorable chapter in his career.
