AFC Wimbledon is negotiating with a multinational group led by Robbie Earle, the former Wimbledon FC player, to acquire a minority stake in the club. Earle, now 61, is best known for his work as a pundit with NBC on its English Premier League coverage. Founded by fans who opposed the move of Wimbledon FC to Milton Keynes, AFC Wimbledon has risen from the ninth tier of English football to League One. The club's supporters' trust has successfully built a new home on the site of the old Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium, which opened in 2020. However, the trust is seeking additional investment to pay off construction-related debt and develop the surrounding land. In a statement, the club said it is in talks with several prospective minority investors who see the opportunity to accelerate the growth of the fan-owned football club. Earle's group, which includes investors from Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States, has experience in player and property development, football operations, and sports governance. The deal is complicated, as the club's constitution demands that it remains under fan-control, with only about 25 per cent of the club's shares on the market. Robbie Earle played 350 games for Wimbledon FC over nine top-flight seasons, scoring 76 goals and captaining the team for five years. The former Jamaica international joined the club in 1991 and was part of the 'Crazy Gang' that achieved a best finish of sixth in the Premier League in 1994. AFC Wimbledon's men's team competes in League One, while the women's team features in the third tier of the pyramid. The club's new stadium has helped to stabilise its finances, but the trust is looking for additional investment to push the team forward on the pitch. The potential investment could lead to the expansion of the 9,000-seater stadium and the development of the club's Academy. Earle declined to comment on the bid, but a source close to his group said the investors are attracted to AFC Wimbledon's story and its potential for growth.
